Fewer Americans file for jobless claims as applications remain at elevated, but not troubling levels

  • By MATT OTT - AP Business Writer

Fewer Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week, but applications remained at recently elevated, though not troubling levels. Jobless claims for the week ending July 20 fell by 10,000 to 235,000 from 245,000 the previous week, the Labor Department reported Thursday. It’s the ninth straight week claims came in above 220,000. Before that stretch, claims had been below that number in all but three weeks so far in 2024. Weekly unemployment claims are widely considered as representative of layoffs, and though they have been slightly higher the past couple of months, they remain at historically healthy levels.

Australian coach under fire at Paris Olympics after saying he's pulling for South Korean swimmer

  • By PAUL NEWBERRY - AP National Writer

An Australian swimming coach is under fire from his own team after saying he was pulling for a South Korean athlete to beat his country’s medal contenders at the Olympics. Head coach Rohan Taylor called the comments by Michael Palfrey “un-Australian” and said he might be sent home before the swimming competition begins Saturday. Palfrey is part of the Australian staff at the Olympics, overseeing preparations for three swimmers and working with a fourth athlete. He previously coached the South Korean men’s 400-meter freestyle world champion Kim Woo-min. In an interview with South Korean television, Palfrey said he's pulling for Kim to claim gold in that event — even though Australia has two leading contenders in world champions Sam Short and Elijah Winnington.

Booties. Indoor dog parks. And following the vet's orders. How to keep pets cool this summer

  • By TERRY TANG - Associated Press

As much of the world swelters, it’s not just people who need help with the dog days of summer. Pet owners have to consider how to both shield and cool down furry family members as intense heat waves become more common. According to the American Pet Products Association, over 180 million people live with at least one pet. Yet, there are a lot of pooch parents not accustomed to prepping for hot weather. Veterinarians advise walking dogs in the morning and evening and staying off pavement. Meanwhile, protective accessories like dog booties and doggy shades can also help with the ruff climate.

It might rain during the Paris Olympics' ambitious opening ceremony on the Seine River

  • AP

There is a chance of rain during the grandiose opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics on the Seine River. Meteo-France, the French weather service, is forecasting overcast skies over the city from midday onward, with light rain expected in the morning. The weather should improve in the afternoon, but the weather service warned Thursday that showers could hit the Paris region in the evening, when the cermony takes place. Instead of a traditional march into a stadium, about 10,500 athletes will parade on more than 90 boats on the Seine River for 6 kilometers (3.7 miles). This will start the ceremony, not mark the end of it, another break from tradition.

Kamala Harris: A Baptist with a Jewish husband and a faith that traces back to MLK and Gandhi

  • By DARREN SANDS - Associated Press

Black clergy who know Vice President Kamala Harris, now the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, marvel at the fusion of traditions and teachings that have molded her religious faith and social justice values. A Baptist married to a Jewish man, she’s inspired by work of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and influenced by the religious traditions of her mother’s native India as well as the Black Church. Religious leaders and theologians say Harris’ candidacy has special symbolic significance following President Joe Biden’s departure from the presidential race. Not only because she would be the nation’s first woman president, but she’s a Black American with South Asian roots and her two cultures are intrinsically linked.

Palestinian Olympic team greeted with cheers and gifts in Paris

  • By MEGAN JANETSKY - Associated Press

Palestinian Olympic athletes have been greeted with a roar of a crowd and gifts of food and roses as they arrived in Paris. The chants of “free Palestine” echoing through the Paris Charles de Gaulle airport upon their arrival Thursday show how conflict and the political tension are rippling through the Olympic Games. The world is coming together in Paris at a moment of global political upheaval, multiple wars, historic migration and a deepening climate crisis, all issues that have risen to the forefront of conversation in the Olympics. A 24-year-old Palestinian swimmer born in Saudi Arabia says that "when we come play sports, people realize we are equal to them.”

Argentina coach slams chaotic 'scandal' at Olympic soccer match vs Morocco

  • By JAMES ROBSON - AP Soccer Writer

The head of Argentina’s soccer federation said the chaotic ending to its Olympic soccer match against Morocco on Wednesday “makes no sense,” and Argentina’s coach called the scene “a scandal.” The opening match of the men’s soccer tournament was suspended for nearly two hours during added time after Morocco fans invaded the field and threw bottles in protest of a late goal by Argentina. The goal was later overturned by the video assistant referee (VAR), and Argentina lost 2-1. Paris organizers said they were trying to “understand the causes and identify appropriate actions” after the match in Saint-Etienne. Argentina’s soccer federation said it had issued a formal protest Wednesday to world governing body FIFA and would do “what is necessary” to guarantee the safety of players.

The United Nations’ cultural agency has decided against putting the Buddhist pilgrimage destination of Lumbini on its list of heritage sites in danger, instead giving authorities in Nepal more time to help restore the famous gardens and temple that are falling into disrepair. Lumbini is the birthplace of Buddha according to Buddhist tradition, and was made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. The World Heritage Committee, meeting in New Delhi, on Thursday gave Nepal until Feb. 1, 2025 to submit a new report on the state of conservation and said the matter would be considered again at next year’s annual meeting.

Croatia declares 3 Montenegrin officials persona non grata over WWII camp genocide statement

  • AP

Croatia has declared three senior Montenegrin government officials persona non grata after they led a declaration in Montenegro’s parliament stating that genocide was committed in a World War II concentration camp operated by a pro-Nazi Croatian regime at the time. Croatia’s Foreign Ministry informed neighboring Montenegro in a diplomatic note on Thursday that the country’s parliament speaker, a lawmaker and vice-premier Aleksa Becic are now unwelcome in the European Union nation. Montenegro’s parliament recently passed a declaration on “genocide” in the Jasenovac prison camp in Croatia, where tens of thousands of ethnic Serbs, Jews and anti-Nazi Croats perished during WWII. Zagreb said the passing of the resolution was “unacceptable, inappropriate and unnecessary."

UN-backed independent experts urge Pakistan to end discrimination, violence against minority Ahmadis

A panel of U.N.-backed independent experts has expressed grave concern about increased discrimination and violence against the minority Ahmadi community in Pakistan and urged authorities to ensure their protection. The experts, who work under a Human Rights Council mandate but do not speak for the United Nations, said in a statement Thursday they are alarmed by recent reports of violence and discrimination against Ahmadis. Ahmadis are adherents of Ahmadiyya, an Islamic messianic movement that originated in the late 19th century. Pakistan’s Parliament declared them non-Muslims in 1974, and they have been repeatedly targeted by Islamic extremists, drawing condemnation from domestic and international human right groups.

Barkley’s ill-fated conversations with Giants general manager Joe Schoen, along with a pained reaction from team owner John Mara, and input from agent Ed Berry were all part of the series that detailed the running back’s departure after six seasons with New York.
