THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

HOW TO GET YOUR PROVISIONAL (CLASS D) DRIVER'S LICENSE

Step 3: Complete your behind-the-wheel training. You have two options to do this:

Option 1:DownloadtheParent/Teen Driving Guide, a comprehensive course to be taught by your parent/guardian. Fill out the checklists in the guide as you go.

OR

Option 2: Sign up with aDDS-licensed school to get 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel training, a certificate will be provided to you from the school once completed.

Step 4:Complete 40 hours of supervised driving with your parent/guardian. Even if you selected Option 2 above, this step is required. You will not be required to present a driving log.

Step 5: Complete your license application online.

Step 6: Bring the following items with you to your local DDS office:

  • Your learner's permit
  • Your certificate of completion for this online course
  • Your Parent/Guardian orResponsible Adult;they will need to sign your application

  • YourCertificate of School Enrollment from your high school. If you are not attending high school, then you must bring proof of enrollment in a GED program or postsecondary school, or a high school diploma or equivalent document.

  • How old do I have to be to take this course?

You must be at least 15 years old to apply for your learner permit and take this online course.

  • How long is this course?

This a 30-hour online driver education course, which satisfies the requirements for the theoretical component of Georgia driver education.

  • Is my certificate available right away after I complete the course?

Your completion must be reported to Georgia DDS, and this is not an automatic or immediate process. However, youwill receive your certificate by email from us within one business day after passing your final exam. Delays may occur ifyou enter incorrect personal information oran invalid permit number.

  • If I'm 16 or 17 and I take this online course, will I be able to get my license?

Yes, but in order to meet all the requirements under Joshua's Law, you must also complete 40 hours of supervised driving practice.

  • Do I need to log my driving hours?

No log is required for the supervised driving hours. However, if you're under 18 and applying for Class D Provisional Driver’s License, a parent, guardian, or DDS-certified driver education instructor will be required to swear or affirm under penalty of law that the you have completed your driving hours. This includes 40 hours of supervised driving experience, 6 hours of which was at night.

  • What is the Knowledge Exam?

It is a written test that must be taken at the DDS office. It includes two tests – the Road Rules Test and the Road Signs Test. You must answer at least 15 out of 20 answers correctly to pass each test. You can prepare by reading the DDS Driver Manual and taking the free DDS Practice Test.

  • What is the difference between a Provisional (Class D) and Full (Class C) License?

A Class D license has certain restrictions. For example, during the first 6 months that you have it, only immediate family members can ride in the vehicle with you. A Class C license does not have any restrictions, but you must be at least 18 years old before you can obtain a Class C license.
